I call it the Jerry Maguire syndrome. Jerry Maguire was a hit movie back in the late 90s. It’s about a struggling sports agent, Jerry Maguire, going through an early midlife crises. Through the course of the movie he gets engaged, breaks it off, meets and gets married to another women & then proceeds to almost ruin that relationship as well. But then, in true Hollywood fashion, he grows up, figures it out and during the final scene bursts into his estranged wife’s support group to profess his love. He then speaks the iconic lines, “You Complete Me.” It’s a beautiful scene that will make even the most stoic among men weep like a little child.

There’s only one problem. It’s complete and utter nonsense. The idea that having someone complete you is even possible, or ideal, is absolutely absurd. It’s simply wrong on every level. It's this kind of belief around romance that is responsible for more heartbreaks and destructive , dysfunctional relationships than anything else.

Right about now I may have just lost you. In fact, you may be feeling a little irritation & hostility towards me. Maybe you even feel attacked? After all, I may have just dismantled a story about romance that you have been living with since the time you were young.

We humans do not give up our seed stories that easily. In fact, we will often fight to keep our perspective even if it does not serve us. Even if it is the cause of our dysfunctional relationships to begin with. But before you dismiss this just hear me out for a minute.
